Eight started out in Auckland, New Zealand in 1996, in Paul's kitchen.
As they had all been in bands before they wanted to take their time to find the music they wanted to make.
They spent the first year hanging out and playing at local gigs while writing music about things that were important to them, such as spirituallity which gives their songs feelings from Rock, through to "spacious calm" and "brooding melodic soundscapes"
In 1998 they went on a 4 month tour through Europe and Asia, visiting Germany, Poland, England, India, and Singapore.
Then in 1999 they released their first album Build independently, which sold out in New Zealand and Singapore.
A few changes saw Chris Cope leave the band as they solidified the line up, and released their first single Whale in December 2001. However they could not have achieved this without the help of NZ on Air from which they received a "New Recording Artist" grant. Both the single and video of Whale got significant airplay throughout NZ finally introducing Eights unique music to the country's music scene.
They have since released 3 more singles, performed extensively, and with a further $50,000 grant in mid 2003 recorded their debut album Moving which was released in March 2004, through Sony BMG.
However after an extended break, the band have decided to call it a day in 2005, and the members have split to explore solo careers and different musical directions.
