My fellow Esperanzians:
As you have probably figured out, I have chosen to run again for an open spot on the Esperanza Advisory Council. I had previously occupied a seat on the first ever Advisory Council and did not seek re-election after my term expired, but now after some careful thought wish to be part once again of the guiding light of Esperanza. My reasons are few, and I will attempt to deliniate them here.
- In the past few weeks, I have found that the community is deeply divided on a number of crucial issues, both philosophical and wiki-related. My hope is that, through the leadership of Esperanza, the Wikipedia community can move away from the differences between users and focus that energy into writing and improving our beloved encyclopedia. I wish to work in Esperanza among the Advisory Committee to that end.
- I have also found the recent activities of Esperanza to be more oriented towards socialization on Wikipedia. While community interaction and talk in the spirit of BarnRaising is always a good thing, sometimes I feel like we as a Wikipedian member association have blurred our focus from assisting dedicated editors in the community. I myself am guilty of that as well, but I hope by increased involvement among all Esperanza members, whether on the Advisory Council or not, we can return to being a "guiding light" so to speak in the project.
- Esperanza means hope in Spanish. As members, we are called to spread this hope to every nook and cranny of Wikipedia. Let us bring this hope especially to those members in need. I recently went through a period where I was indeed hopeless about the success of Wikipedia. Esperanza members played a great part in bringing me back, and I credit them with my presence here today. I feel that if this hope is taken to many more users in the same situation, the community can be greatly strengthened.
These three reasons lead me to submit myself, my words, and my actions to you for approval. I encourage any criticism, comments, or questions on this statement, and will strive to answer any concerns. Thank you very much for your time.
