In musical terminology, forte is a dynamic level lower than fortissimo and higher than mezzo forte. It is typically abbreviated to f on most sheet music. Forte comes from the Italian: forte = strong.
In marching percussion, forte may refer to the height from which the percussionist is directed to strike the instrument. In this context, f typically refers to a height of between 9 and 12 inches off of the drum, keyboard, or auxiliary percussion.
On scores, forte is notated f, and fortissimo is notated ff.
