Fortune's Favourites (novel)

Fortune's Favourites is the third book in the Masters of Rome Series by author Colleen McCullough. This third installment in the series begins by detailing Lucius Cornelius Sulla's rise to the Dictatorship and becoming the Master of Rome, his proscriptions, and his willing resignation of power, followed by his death.
While Sulla's shadow covers the majority of the book, after his death, three other men begin to shine as the new generation of Romans vying to become the Masters of Rome; Pompey the Great's youthful campaigns and his fierce battle against the Roman renegade Quintus Sertorius, Marcus Licinius Crassus' struggle with Spartacus, and finally, the youthful adventures and career of Julius Caesar all take the center role after the demise of Sulla, culminating with the joint consulship of Pompey and Crassus.
The book's title is referred to often within the series, mainly expressing the Roman belief that Fortuna, the Goddess of Luck, would take a hand in the role of her favorites, helping them along when they most needed her.
