Ghazi Mohammed

Ghazi Mollah, also known as Ghazi Mohammed (Кази-Мулла, Гази-Магомед in Russian) (1795-1832) was the first imam of Dagestan and Chechnya (1828).
Ghazi Mollah came from an Avar family of free landowners. In the 1820s, he became a follower of a sufi order. After he had pronounced himself the imam of Dagestan, he called upon the mountaineers (горцы in Russian, or gortsy) to join his jihad against the tsarist army. In 1830, Ghazi Mollah unsuccefully tried to capture the Avar capital of Khunzakh. In 1831, he carried his military operations over to Northern Dagestan, where he would win a few victories. Initially, the peasants of the Tarki Shamkhalate showed support for Ghazi Mollah, but later on they began to distance themselves from the rebellion due to his failure to improve their living conditions. The tsarist army soon forced him to retreat to into the mountains of Dagestan and finally killed him in a battle near Ghimry. Ghazi Mollah was succeeded by Gamzat-bek.
