Hanover is a town in Chautauqua County, New York, USA. The population was 7,638 at the 2000 census.
The Town of Hanover lies in the northeast corner of Chautauqua County.

The first settler arrived around 1802. The Town of Hanover was formed in 1812 from part of the Town of Pomfret. The size of Hanover was reduced later to form the new Towns of Villenova (1823) and Sheridan (1927).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.1 km² (49.5 mi²). 127.7 km² (49.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.34%) is water.
The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), US Route 20 and New York State Route 5 pass through the north part of the town. New York State Route 39 crosses the center of the town.

On the north, the town borders Lake Erie and on the northeast, Cattaraugus Creek, which is the boundary of Erie County, New York. The east town line is the border of Cattaraugus County. The south town line is shared with Town of Villenova, and the west town line is shared with the Town of Sheridan.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,638 people, 2,975 households, and 2,040 families residing in the town. The population density was 59.8/km² (154.9/mi²). There were 3,501 housing units at an average density of 27.4/km² (71.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.82% White, 0.48% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.70% of the population.
There were 2,975 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,567, and the median income for a family was $44,057. Males had a median income of $38,034 versus $22,754 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,654. About 6.3% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.3% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.

- Balltown -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town, east of Smiths Mills.
- Cattaraugus Reservation -- A reservation the Seneca tribe borders the northeast part of the town.
- Dennisons Corners -- A location north of Keaches Corners.
- Forestville -- The Village of Forestville, near the west town line and in the southwest part of the town on NY-39.
- Hanford Bay -- A lakeside hamlet in the northeast part of the town, west of Irving.
- Hanover Center -- A hamlet southeast of Silver Creek on County Roads 89 and 93.
- Irving -- A hamlet on NY-5 & US-20 on the northeast town line. The community was first called "Cattaraugus" and later "Acasto" and part of the community was called "La Grange." The village is adjacent to Cattaraugus Creek.
- Keaches Corners -- A community north of Forestville on County Road 85.
- Nashville -- A location on Route 39 in the southeast corner of the town.
- Parcells Corners -- A hamlet in the southeast part of town on Route 39 and County Road 93.
- Smith Mills -- A hamlet in the easter part of the town on County Road 93.
- Silver Creek -- The Village of Silver Creek, in the northeast corner of the town on US Route 20 and NY Route 5.
- Sunset Bay -- A lakeside hamlet in the northeast part of the town on County Road 95.
