Hariyama (ハリテヤマ Hariteyama?) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise—a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards, and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Hariyama in the games, anime, and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon—untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments—and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
Hariyama's name is from Japanese name Hariteyama. "Hariteyama" is derived from Harite(張り手, a sumo wrestling technique) and Yama(山, lit. mountain ; tipical ending of names of sumo wrestlers). Many also believe that Hariyama's name is a combination of "Hairy" and "Arm".
Its English name is amusing for Japanese, since "hariyama(針山)" means pincushion.

[edit] Biological Characteristics
Hariyama trains by stomping on the ground to build power, and it gains enough power so that its arm thrusts can snap telephone poles in two and send ten-ton trucks flying. Although it appears fat, its bulk is made up almost entirely of muscle. If Hariyama were to tighten these muscles, it would be as hard as a rock. It has been known to challenge people to contests of strength without any hesitation. It has even been observed to stand on train tracks and stop trains in their tracks using forearm thrusts as a display of its power.
Hariyama appears more like a sumo wrestler than Makuhita. Its hands are large and orange. It wears blue trousers with a yellow miwashi - a type of sumo clothing.

Hariyama can be evolved from a level 24 Makuhita, or caught in the wild in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald. In the victory road, Hariyama is actually quite a common sight.
Any given Hariyama may have one of two abilities: Thick Fat, which cuts Fire and Ice damage against it by half, and Guts, which multiplies Hariyama's already impressive attack power by 150% if it has been affected with a status condition. Also, like Makuhita, 75% of the Hariyama population are male and 25% are female. Finally, five percent of the Hariyama to be caught in the wild hold the King's Rock item.
Statistically, Hariyama can be viewed as a non-armored tank; It has tremendous hit points and attack power, offset by below-average defense, special defense, speed, and lowest of all, special attack. It can learn a lot of strong physical moves, including Earthquake by TM, and its special moves include Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch (all from the Emerald move tutor), and Surf, but its low special attack means that these four moves won't do very well in competitive play. Hariyama are practically known for the Fake Out attack, and it is found in both Hariyama movesets and wild Hariyama. It may end up doing lots of physical damage, but due to its slow speed, special defense, and Fighting type, it is not much more than a big target to Pokémon centered around special attack movesets.
This is often the case in solo battles. However, in 2-on-2 battles, Hariyama can prove to be an immensely effective supporting Pokémon. The move Fake Out can help the player gain quite an advantage at the start of a battle by making one of the opponent’s Pokémon flinch so that the player’s other Pokémon on the field, which could be a powerful sweeper with lower defenses and speed, can have a much higher chance of unleashing a powerful attack without being KO’ed first. Then comes Hariyama’s other team talent: Helping Hand, which it can gain as an egg move by breeding with a Pokémon such as a male Volbeat. Hariyama can use the supportive move (which always attacks first) to provide its partner Pokémon even more of an advantage by upping the power of its move. Hariyama are therefore used much more for this role in 2-on-2 battling than for attacking. A popular moveset for this type of Hariyama includes the above moves and Protect.

Brawly's Hariyama evolved during his battle with Ash. In the opening sequence to the seventh season of the Pokémon anime, Hariyama is seen battling Pikachu. One of Ash's Hoenn rivals, Tyson, has one, as does the Frontier Brain of the Battle Arena, Greta, as seen in the Battle Frontier saga.
