Harkins Theatres is a privately owned and operated regional movie theater chain in Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.. The company is currently planning more theatres in California, Texas, and Arizona. It grew from a single theater in 1933 to 326 screens today at 26 unique locations.
Harkins operates the only independent/art/foreign movie theater currently in Phoenix- the Valley Art Theatre on Mill Avenue in Tempe, and the Camelview theater in Scottsdale next to the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall.
Harkins used to operate the Cine Capri theater by the Biltmore Fashion Park. The Cine Capri was built in 1966 by ABC Intermountain Theatres. It had 800 seats and a 58 foot wide screen, the largest in Arizona. It was torn down in 1998, but was rebuilt in 2003 at a 14 screen multiplex with a 600 seat room and 70 foot wide screen at the Harkins 101 location on the north side of Phoenix. That theater also contains memorabilia and photos from the old Cine Capri. The Cine Capri has also been re-incarnated at the company's newest locations, The Bricktown 16, the Southlake Towne Square 14, and the Northfield 18 at Northfield Stapleton in Denver, Colorado.
Harkins currently holds the distinction of entertaining more movie-goers each year than all of the other sporting venues in Arizona. The company's largest theatre, Superstition Springs 25 is also the busiest theatre in Arizona, and among the top 10 in the country.
Harkins is currently building new theatres in 14 locations throughout Arizona, California, and Texas. The founder of the theater chain is Dwight "Red" Harkins.
