Heighliner
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Dune universe of Frank Herbert, the Heighliners of the Spacing Guild are enormous carrier starships used for interstellar travel.
Their operation requires both a Guild Navigator and a Holtzman generator. While the Holtzman generator uses the Holtzman effect to "fold space" and thereby facilitate traveling through space without moving, the Navigator is responsible to find a safe path through the universe and guide the ship along this path. This is accomplished under the influence of melange in the form of the orange spice gas, which gives the Navigator the limited form of prescience required for this job.
Heighliners jump from planet to planet, parking in planetary orbits because they are much too large to land. In these parking orbits, normal spaceships — orbital ferries, or ships designed for interplanetary travel — embark and disembark the heighliner. Special laws govern the stay aboard a heighliner; among other things, heighliners are considered neutral territory and all acts of war aboard heighliners carry very stiff penalties.
According to the Legends of Dune series, heighliners were invented by Norma Cenva and are manufactured on the planet Ix. During the events of these prequels, a heighliner was expertly spacefolded into a cavern under Ix, crushing a rebel army. This is the only known occasion on which a heighliner has descended to a planet, and it was only accomplished due to the expertise of the Navigator.
