The fourth HMAS Sydney (FFG 03) is an Adelaide class frigate laid down on 21 August 1980, launched 26 September 1980 and commissioned 29 January 1983.
HMAS Sydney was the first of four frigates selected for upgrade under Project Sea 1390. HMAS Darwin, Melbourne and Newcastle will be upgraded in the future. Two of the frigates will not be upgraded. The second eldest frigate HMAS Canberra was retired on 12 November 2005 and the eldest HMAS Adelaide is scheduled for retirement in Mid to Late 2007. The upgrade features an 8-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) for 32 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM), installed forward of the Mk 13 launcher. New diesel generators, new wiring and upgrades to the combat and air conditioning systems. Displacement has increased by 100 tonnes to 4,200 tonnes.
On 6 December 2004 HMAS Sydney began sea trials after completing the upgrade.
The Royal Australian Navy is currently upgrading its missile stocks to included Harpoon II anti-ship missiles and SM-2 Standard anti-air missiles.
