Honda CB900C

The Honda CB900C is a type of touring motorcycle. CB900C's are based off of the engines for the DOHC CB750, in fact it is a bored and stroked version of the CB750. Some of the differences lie in hotter cams and an altered transmission for the extra power the 900 produces. One of the most radical things about the 900 Custom motorcycles is that the 900 uses a subtransmission for two purposes. The first is that the 900 uses the same final drive as the GL1100 of the day, and the drive is mounted on the right side of the tire, while the engine output is on the left side of the bike. The other purpose that the subtransmission is to add some extra gearing to the bike. The basic 900 engine has five gears and the subtranmission splits every gear giving a total of 10 possible gears to use. Most use the subtransmission as an overdrive gear though as shifting the pair of levers becomes difficult and time consumming.
The CB900C was produced by Honda to compete against a growing market demand, a mid weight shaft driven motorcycle. Other examples include the XS750 and the GS850. Of the three bikes Honda's CB900C faired well against the XS and the GS having more power on hand. The reviews of the day didn't favor the fuel economy of the 900 or the saddle.
Honda also produced a line of accesories for the CB900C, many were taken from the Goldwings. Hondaline Fairings were the same fairing as the GL1100 and GL500 and GL650 used. Bagage was from the Hondaline GL1000 line. Several other accesories were marketed for the CB900C over it's three year production run.
The CB900C started production in 1980 and the final production year was 1982. The CB900C was replaced in 1983 by the CB1000C.
