The Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP), which translates into the Batak Christian Protestant Church, is the largest Protestant church in Indonesia.
It has a reported membership of almost three million faithful.
The Ephorus (or Archbishop), Rev. Dr. Bonar Napitupulu is the present leader of the HKBP.
The church exists throughout Indonesia. It was founded in the 1880s by Dr Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen, a German missionary, who worked in the District of Tapanuli in Tarutung, Northern Sumatra.
Tarutung remains the stronghold for the HKBP in the mainly Muslim nation of Indonesia. Ephorus Nommensen tried to convert all the people of the Batak region.
