"I Heard Her Call My Name" is a song by American avant-garde rock band The Velvet Underground, taken from their album, White Light/White Heat. It is a particularly loud, brash and aggressive song, thanks mainly because of Lou Reed's distorted guitar solo, over which almost nothing else in the track is clearly audible.
The meaning of the song isn't too clear but most believe it's about sexual intercourse while others say it is about a singer who fell in love with a woman by the name of "Mad Mary Williams". She dies and then he picks up the phone one morning and hears her calling his name. The song is often associated with punk music due to the high levels of guitar distortion. It is 4 minutes 38 seconds in length and is succeeded on the album by Sister Ray, another punk-esque song, according to Lou Reed.
The second guitar solo is considered to be one of Lou Reed's finest ever and it has been named the greatest of all time.[1]
