Jeffrey Mishlove
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jeffrey Mishlove (PhD) (b. 1946-) is the only person in the US to receive a Ph.D. for research in Parapsychology from an accredited US university, University of California, Berkeley, 1980. This was an individual, interdisciplinary program he started in 1973 supervised by:
- Michael Scriven, parapsychology, philosophy, and educational evaluation
- C. West Churchman, systems theory
- Charles Tart, psychology and parapsychology
- Diane S. Clemens, history and historical methodology
- James Harder, UFO field investigation
He did experience major resistance to his program from some quarters within the university. Image of Dr. Mishlove's Diploma. In October 1980, an article about Mishlove's parapsychology diploma was published in Psychology Today. The article implied that Mishlove's work was shoddy and that the status of his degree was questionable. Mishlove sued the magazine for libel. In 1986, the lawsuit was settled out of court. Mishlove received a $30,000 settlement.
In 1969 he earned a B.A. degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At that time, he was a founder of the undergraduate Psychology Student Association. After earning his degree, he served as a mental health worker at the H. Douglas Singer Zone Center in Rockford, Illinois.
In 1969, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, enrolling as a graduate student in Criminology at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1973 he earned a Master of Criminology degree from UC Berkeley. In 1971, in Berkeley, he organized and directed the Health Information Program on the Berkeley campus, otherwise known as HIP House. The program specialized in offering non-drug, human potential alternatives to the student population.
He worked in radio as an interviewer at KPFA in Berkeley, from 1972 through 1977, hosting the "Mind's Ear" and "Roots of Consciousness" programs. He also hosted the "MindSpace" weekly program for KSAN-FM in San Francisco in 1975 and 1976.
In 1979 through 1981, he taught parapsychology at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, (now in Pleasant Hill), California. He has been a member of the Parapsychological Association since 1981. In 1982, in association with William Kautz, Sc.D. and the Center for Conscious Evolution in San Francisco, CA, he founded the Applied Psi Newsletter.
In 1982, he founded Psionic Systems, a company that designed and sold ESP testing and training software designed to run on the Texas Instruments 99/4a computer.
In 1983, he co-founded Dura-Print, Inc., a company that specialized in an innovative fingerprint detection system based on cyanoacrylate (i.e., superglue) fuming.
Since 1986, he has been producer and host of the Thinking Allowed, national public television series. In this capacity he conducted over 200 interviews with leading creative thinkers in philosophy, psychology, health, science and spirituality. Many interviews also focused on psychic topics.
From 1986 to 1988, he served as President of the California Society for Psychical Study.
In 1987, Mishlove received a California Psychology license. His doctoral degree in parapsychology was ruled by the California Board of Psychology to be the equivalent of a doctoral degree in psychology.
Since 1993, he has served as President of the non-profit Intuition Network. The purpose of this organization is to help create a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities. The Intuition Network was founded by Professor Weston Agor, at the University of Texas, El Paso.
He has served as a board member and as vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. In 2001, the Association presented him with its "Pathfinder Award" for his outstanding contributions to the field of consciousness research.
He currently teaches parapsychology at the University of Philosophical Research and at the Holmes Institute.
He is has been married, since 1978, to Janelle M. Barlow, Ph.D. Together they are owners of two business consulting and training companies, TMI US and Branded Customer Service.
In 2003, Jeffrey Mishlove was the subject of a chapter in a book by Walter Semkiw, M.D., titled, Return of the Revolutionaries: The Case For Reincarnation and Soul Groups Reunited. In this chapter, Semkiw presented his hypothesis that Mishlove had been the great psychologist, psychical researcher, philosopher and scholar of religion, William James, in a past-lifetime. In the book, Semkiw noted that Mishlove, himself, is skeptical of this hypothesis.
