Kitaotao is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Bukidnon, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 26,073 people in 5,194 households.

Kitaotao was once a part of the district of Kibawe. The creation of Dangcagan into municipality reclassified Kitaotao as part of Dangcagan. In 1961, upon the issuance of executive order No. 444 by the President Carlos P. Garcia relative to the creation of municipality paved the way for some districts and settlements to form into municipalities. Under the sponsorship of the Late Honorable Benjamin B. Tabios, Congressman of Bukidnon, House Bill No. 1655 was passed by congress and approved by the President Ferdinand E. Marcos as Republic Act. 4801, an Act creating the Municipality of Kitaotao in the Province of Bukidnon on June 18, 1966.


The first political election was on November 1967. Kitaotao is composed of 35 barangays and 217 sitios. Compared to other municipalities of Bukidnon, Kitaotao has a total land area of 92,730.6941 hectares. It. is approximately 69 kilometers from the City of Malaybalay where the set of Provincial Government is located.

Location

The municipality of Kitaotao is one of the municipalities in the Third Congressional District in the province of Bukidnon. It is situated in the southern part of Bukidnon and approximately sixty seven (67) kilometers from the city of Malaybalay where the set of provincial government is located. Kitaotao is situated in the southern part of Bukidnon. It lies at 124 degrees and 55 minutes longitude and 7 degrees and 40 minutes to 7 degrees and 22.5 minutes latitude coordinates. It is bounded in the north by the municipalities of Don Carlos, Quezon and San Fernando; in the west by the municipality of Kadingilan, Dangcagan and Kibawe; in the south by the Province of North Cotabato and in the east by the Province of Davao del Norte.


Topography

The area along Sayre Highway is a plateau while the eastern portion including the Pulangi area is mostly rolling to hilly with slope ranging from 18-30%. There are several mountains along the North Cotabato-Davao del Norte and Kitaotao boundary. Foremost of them are mount Sinaka, Malambo, Molawit, Makaayat, Kibinaton, Mahanao, Sumalili, Zita and mount Kibanda which serve as sanctuaries of the rare Philippine wildlife. The area also featured the numerous waterfalls such as Sumalili, Kinanoran, Matigol and Lalapoy falls.


About 6.54 percent of the total land area of the municipality consists of level to gently sloping with a slope ranging from 0-3 percent. The area covered is approximately 5,519.74 hectares. On this areas located the rice paddies which constitute about 14.20 percent of the area. This category also is mostly found in the A&D land and a portion of Barangay Poblacion, Malobalo, Sto. Rosario and Kauyonan.


The sloping to undulating with slope ranging from 3-8% occupies 4,515.82 hectares and 5.35% of the total land area. The 8-18% slope covered an area of 15,664.04 hectares and 18.57% of the total land area, 18-30% slope (Rolling to Hilly) occupies 21,409.27 hectares and 25.38% of the total land area.


The Cotabato and Davao Steep hill to mountainous (30-50% slope) is the biggest in area among all categories which occupies 22,194.89 hectares. These areas represent 26.31% of the total land area widely spread at Barangay Sinuda and throughout the eastern portion of the municipality except the cliff or steep and very steep land portion of barangay Kahusayan, Kipilas, Panganan and Digongan. These 50% and above slope occupy 15,050.23 hectares or 17.84% of the total land area.


Drainage

Drainage is generally directed in the southern and eastern part of the municipality where the principal water such as Pulangi, Muleta, Kulaman, Rawari, Zita, Salug and Simod rivers.


Climate


The climatic condition of Kitaotao is relatively cool throughout the year while rainfall is distributed almost even throughout the year also. Prevailing winds flows from North to East during the month of October to January. East to Southeast from February to April and to the South from May to December. Wind flows that go along these directions are brought and carried by the northeast monsoon respectively.


Soil Type

There are several types of soil in the municipality but Kidapawan clay loam is the most extensive. Adtuyon clay is also present while alluvial soil also abounds. Some portion of land in the municipality like Poblacion is underlain by a thick soil cover that conceals the bedrock formations. Boulders of volcanic composition and texture, albeit very scarce, are prominent in some isolated patches. The soil is dark brown with moderate to strong clay content and megascopically appears to be a volcaniclastic weathering derivative.

Population

The 2000 census registered a total population of 37,733 persons in the municipality. A decrease of 671 over the 1995 population with an average decrease rate of 0.352 percent during the censal period was noted. Population density was also decrease from 2.44 per hectare to 2.95 per hectare in that same period. Among the 35 barangay of the municipality, Sinuda has the most number of inhabitants. During the 2000 count, this consisted of 4,655 constituting 8.10 percent of the total population of the municipality. Barangay Cabalantian had the smallest with only 325 persons.


Religion

Although there are already numerous religious affiliations present in the locality, but still, Roman Catholic rank the highest in population with more than one half of the municipality’s population are Roman Catholic believer at 70.29%. It is followed by Baptist, Aglipay, Iglesia Ni Kristo, UCCP and other progressive religion in the municipality.


Dialects

The common medium of communication in the municipality is Cebuano while the Bukidnon dialects are spoken into Waray-waray, Ilocano, Ilongo and other ethnic tongues.

The people’s main livelihood is agriculture as it is indicated in the number of farmer’s cooperative, farmers association and the wide area of the land attributed to agriculture. Major crops planted include corn and rice while secondary crops are coconut, coffee, sugarcane, rubber, cacao and fruit trees. Agro-industrial activity in the municipality is limited to corn shelling and rice milling while cottage industry is also limited to dressmaking, mat weaving and handicraft making.
