Knox City Shopping Centre in Wantirna South, Victoria, Australia is one of the largest shopping malls in the southern hemisphere, and was first built in 1977. The shopping centre is on the corner Stud Road and the Burwood Highway. It contains many Australian department stores. After the recent reconstruction it was advertised as the largest shopping centre in Victoria. This claim, however, can be disputed. Southland Shopping Centre, also in Victoria, has almost 200 more stores than Knox City Shopping Centre, although Knox City has more parking space and more floor area. The previous extension in 1990 doubled the centre's size to include a bus interchange .

Prior to November 2003, Chadstone had remained Australia's largest shopping mall. However, Chadstone was over when the Knox City complex had a $150 million major refurbishment (which began in 2002). This refurbishment included the construction of the outdoor O-Zone precinct, which was designed with for outdoor leisure and dining. On the north side of the Ozone walkway named "Town Walk", specialty stores including an Ozmosis surf shop are located there (Ozmosis has recently also been placed inside, under the Food Court along with Supre and Valley Girl in a new renovation). From the cinema onwards towards the south side there are a number of Irish pubs and pizza restaurants, a Nando's and located across the road from the main shopping precinct a Foodstar buffet restaurant. Ozone also encompasses an AMF Bowling Centre, Glow in the Dark Mini Golf and Fitness First gym. This was done by taking away the Towerpoint area, on the eastern side of the precinct. This large scale redevelopment allowed the centre to achieve a lettable area of 141,714m², breaking Chadstone's record of 126,980m² at the time. With over 13.3 million people visiting a year the shopping centre has 6,344 carparking spaces in total; 1,923 of these are undercover. Knox City Shopping Centre is owned by the AMP Shopping Centre Trust.
Westfield Parramatta in Sydney also claims to be the largest shopping centre in Australia. Parramatta has a smaller net leasable area but has over 100 more stores than both Chadstone Shopping Centre and Knox City Shopping Centre with a total of 560 stores after its 2006 renovation. Southland Shopping Centre in Melbourne also has many more stores than Knox, with 506+ stores. Major stores inclue Myer, Coles, Kmart, Target, BI-LO, Lincraft, Harvey Norman, Borders Books and Music, Toys R Us, Rebel Sport, a Bast Warehouse and a 15 screen Village Cinema Complex
