Kumbakonam is a small temple-town with very peaceful life. It is rich in Tamil culture. The food served in Kumbakonam is considered to be the best in Tamil Cuisine. Kumbakonam is known as "Kasi of South India." Big temples, with beautifully carved sculptures are located very near to each other.
Besides Men's college, where the famous mathematician Ramanujam had studied, the Government college of Arts and Crafts is also famous for producing some of the well known artist.
The quiet town has faced some of the worst disasters, such as the stampede in Mahamaham in 1992 and tragic fire disaster in the year 2004.
