Live and Learn is main theme of Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It is performed by the band Crush 40 headlined by Hardline frontman Johnny Gioeli (vocals) and long time SEGA music producer Jun Senoue (guitars). It is also used for the final boss battle between Super Sonic, Super Shadow and The Finalhazard.
This song marked the second time that Crush 40 had created a main theme for a Sonic The Hedgehog related game, the first being Open Your Heart, the main theme from Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) and Sonic Adventure DX (GameCube).
There are two main versions of the full vocal song:
- Album Version - The version that appears on just about every album release. It has an opening sound riff and a couple extra "Yeah, yeah, yeah..." vocal bits at the end.
- Original Soundtrack Version - The OST version is basically the same as the album version, except it has the opening sound as well as the extra "Yeah, yeah, yeah..." parts omitted. This is the version that is actually used in the game for the final boss battle.
A shorter instrumental version of the song plays during the title screen and remixed intstrumentals are used during option screens. Another instrumental piece is also used during Sonic and Shadow's transformation into Super forms (this version is called "EVENT #11"). These versions are entitled "SA2 Ver. A, B, and C".
It is used in the Japanese version of Sonic X during the fight with Biolizard. It was taken out of the 4Kids version due to their way of dubbing anime.
In the game Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow powers up with the seven Chaos Emeralds to become Super Shadow and fight Devil Doom. The music that plays as a prelude to his transformation is the main theme of that game, I Am (All of Me), but upon his change, the music transitions to a remix of Live and Learn.
