Luxury (band)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Luxury is a rock band from Toccoa, Georgia.
Luxury started in the early 90s as a band called The Shroud, playing in the music scene in the deep South. They changed their name soon before signing to the still young Tooth and Nail Records while that company was still attempting to release artsy music, art core. Often compared to the works of Morrissey and The Smiths, their first album, "Amazing & Thank You," was one of the few non-hardcore releases to garner some form of success for the company.
They toured the U.S. extensively until a bad accident with their van left the band in the hospital in 1995 on their way back from Cornerstone Festival (Piltdown Man was traveling back with them and members of the band had similar injuries, maily the lead singer had a injured neck). They had very few, and possibly no more shows for a year. They were back on tour supporting their second album, "The Latest & the Greatest," though with a few less dates than anticipated. Unhappy with Tooth and Nail Records, the left in 1997 and released one more album in 1999 with Bulletproof Records, a smaller though more artist friendly label. Soon after, Luxury went their separate ways to pursue the next stages of their lives.
James Bozeman started a new band called Canary which soon became They Sang as They Slew while Lee Bozeman recorded a solo album, Love and Affection, under the moniker All Things Bright and Beautiful. 2005 found the band back in Toccoa to regroup and make a new record. Finding their voice amidst family and work, they realized that their chemistry remained and that “The Greatest Christian Rock N Roll Band” still had some songs to sing. Ending a six year hiatus, Luxury started to work on songs for an EP that eventually evolved and expanded into a full-length, Health and Sport, for Northern Records.
On Health and Sport, Luxury’s influences are as obtuse as they are profound: from Blonde Redhead, The Notwist, and Low (band), to Led Zeppelin, Fugazi, and Queen.
With the new recording, original members Lee, Glenn, Chris, and Jamey are joined by Matt Hinton, who played guitar on "The Latest and the Greatest" and "Luxury" and has played live with Luxury since 1999. They juxtapose the title with the actual theme of the record: realization and resignation. According to Lee Bozeman, it was “a giving up of sorts; a kind of early mid-life realization that things end and that we have to come to terms with our failings.”
The band comprises:
