[edit] Location
Maplewood is on Portland's western border with Garden Home, and on Multnomah County's western border with Washington County. (Small portions of the neighborhood, and thus the City of Portland, extend into Washington County.) The neighborhood is defined as the area west of SW 45th Ave. to the city limit (at approximately SW 66th Ave.), between SW Vermont St. (the northern edge), and SW Multnomah Blvd. (the southern edge). The neighborhood is in a hilly area, with a creek running through the neighborhood, including a green space. Portland's grid street system fails in this neighborhood because of the topography. Most of the streets conform to the grid, but with many dead ends. There is also the namesake Maplewood Rd that is a curving road that starts at the intersection with SW 45th Ave. and SW Multnomah Blvd., and curves until it becomes SW 52nd Ave. near Maplewood Elementary School. The Ashcreek neighborhood borders to the South, Hayhurst to the north, and Multnomah Village to the east, and Garden Home-Whitford CDP in unincorporated Washington County to the west.
[edit] Business
Maplewood is almost exclusively a residential neighborhood, with its only commercial businesses along its outer edge. On the corner of SW 45th Ave and SW Vermont St is a small strip mall containing a Plaid Pantry convenience store, a laundromat, and a dentist. Across the same corner is another small strip mall containing a Pizza/Bento restaurant, a 'kid friendly' restaurant, a coffee shop (with free WiFi,) and a neighborhood clinic for the local Oregon Health Sciences University hospital. At the intersection of Maplewood Rd, 45th Ave, and Multnomah Blvd, there is a Shell gas station, another Plaid Pantry convenience store, a Papa Murphy's pizza restaurant, a self-defense dojo, and a beauty salon. Just outside the Western end of the neighborhood is more developed, with multiple restaurants, a grocery store, and a small strip mall containing a Starbucks and a Blockbuster, along with other small retail stores including a used book store specializing in paperbacks.
[edit] Neighborhood attactions
The well-hidden April Hill park contains a play structure, a soccer field, and a few trails leading to Woods Creek. Across 45th Ave from the neighborhood on its Northern corner is Gabriel Park and the Southwest Community Center. Just outside the neighborhood's Western edge is the Garden Home Recreation Center. The Alpenrose Dairy is just to the North of the neighborhood, a short trip down Shattuck Rd.
[edit] Worship
The only church accessible from within the boundaries of the neighborhood is the West Hills Friends church (a Quaker church.) Accessible from the border streets of Vermont or 45th Ave are St. Luke Lutheran Church (ELCA) and St. John Fisher Catholic Church. On the border street of 45th Ave itself, but inside the boundary, is Multnomah Presbyterian Church.
[edit] Education
Inside the neighborhood is its namesake Maplewood Elementary School, a K-5 school in the Portland Public Schools district. St. John Fisher, St. Luke, and the West Hills Friends churches all have parochial schools serving various grade levels.
[edit] Neighborhood association
Maplewood has a small but active neighborhood association.
