Masters (athletics)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Masters in athletics (especially track and field) is the name of the category reserved for competition among older athletes; the name of the category for keeping world records for these athletes; and a term for the competitors themselves. USATF and IAAF define a masters athlete as "any competitor over the age of 35". Many U.S. meets open their masters events to anyone age 30 and over. (In Europe, such athletes are called "veterans", but several countries started to use "masters" too.)
Competitions and records for masters are held in 5-year age groups. For international meets and records an athlete enters the next age group at his or her birthday, but in some countries (Germany for example) the age groups are according to birth year.
For rowing, an athlete is eligible to compete as a Master at age 27.
