Matthew Rolston
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matthew Rolston is an acclaimed American photographer and music video director, known for videos in Pop and R&B genres.
Matthew Rolston was born and raised in Los Angeles under a spell cast by the myth of Hollywood. He developed his talents as a photographer at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena.
Over the years, Rolston’s still photography work for Harper’s Bazaar, Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine and Rolling Stone (among many others) has highlighted his visual panache and control of detail.
Rolston’s photographs have been exhibited at prestigious galleries across the country, in Europe and Japan, and at museums, including THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART in New York City and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. In addition, a collection of his photographs, “Big Pictures”, was published in 1991 by Bullfinch Press.
Soon, Rolston expanded his savvy for classic composition and style by working as a director of music videos for artists including Janet Jackson, Madonna, En Vogue,Poe, Lenny Kravitz, Dido, Garbage, Sugababes, Jody Watley, and Beyonce Knowles. He has also directed acclaimed commercials for the likes of GAP, Ralph Lauren, Neutrogena, L'Oréal, Clairol, Pantene, Burberry, Maybelline, Levi's and Revlon.
His work remains infused by a coterie of influences: famed 1930’s glamour photographer George Hurrell, early Hollywood director Josef von Sternberg, and classic cinema costume designers Adrian and Travis Banton, all of whom, to quote Rolston, “invented Hollywood style”. Currently Singed To HSI London and Venus Entertainment.
