Michael Mates

Michael John Mates (born 9 June 1934) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is member of Parliament for East Hampshire. He is a Member of the Privy Council.
He was first elected to Parliament in October 1974 general election for Petersfield in Hampshire, and has represented East Hampshire since 1983. He has been a Chairman of the 1922 committee, and from 1992 to 1993 was Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office. He resigned after a scandal involving fugitive businessman Asil Nadir. Before entering Parliament he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Queen's Dragoon Guards.
Mates's son, James Mates, is a senior reporter and presenter for ITN.
