Mine Safety Appliances, or MSA, is a maker of construction, defense, and chemical safety equipment based in the Pittsburgh suburb of Blawnox, Pennsylvania. The company was formed to develop equipment that would protect mine workers from inhaling coal dust and toxic fumes. They gained global recognition for their inventing night vision goggles during World War II. Since the turn of the 21st Century, MSA has seen record sales. It should be noted that only a small portion of the company's current products involve mining related products.
The corporation's assets are divided into five subsidies, each managing one line of Mine Safety Appliance's products. Under its Fire Safety divsion, the company markets respiratory equipment, thermal imaging tools, gas detectors, and fire-resistant clothing. MSA's Law Enforcement divsion also markets respiratory devices, as well as chemical protection and bullet-proof clothing. The company's Military divsion creates gas masks, helmets, and communication systems. Air purifiers, helmets, eye protection, and harnesses are sold uner the Construction line. The company markets its mining products under the Gas and Chemicals label. While the majority of MSA's products are these speciality products, availbile only through distributors or the company's own supply chain, the company also sells head, eye, ear, lung, and body protection to individuals through retail outlets.
