Mora is a city located in Kanabec County, Minnesota. The county name is the derivative of an Indian term described as "snake". Major ancestry groups in Kanabec County are German, Swedish and Norwegian. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,193. It is the county seat of Kanabec County6.
Among other things, Mora plays host to the Mora Vasaloppet, the largest ski race in Minnesota, as well as the Snake River Canoe Race, the Mora Half-Marathon, and the Mora Bicycle Tour. Mora is also the home of a gigantic Dala horse, which commemorates the town's Swedish roots.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.77% water.

As of the census2 of 2004, the estimated population of Kanabec county was 16,056. This was a change of 7.1% from the year 2000. The population density in the year 2000 was 301.4/km² (781.2/mi²). There were 1,471 housing units at an average density of 138.9/km² (359.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.71% White, 0.28% African American, 1.28% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,381 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,566, and the median income for a family was $40,577. Males had a median income of $32,222 versus $21,797 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,949. 9.0% of the population and 6.0% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
