Municipality of Mexicali

Mexicali is a municipio (second-level municipality) in the Mexican state of Baja California. Its municipal seat is located in the city of Mexicali. According to the 2000 census, it had a population of 764,602 inhabitants. It reached 855,962 in 2005.
The city was founded in 1903 and its name comes from MEXico and CALIfornia, as is Calexico, California across the border, having the characteristic of being the only pair of border cities where the Mexican one is the larger and dominant one in the region.
