[edit] Biography
Nicole Krauss was raised on Long Island where she felt she had "the last American childhood." As a child, she was very creative, coming up with games such as "Office" where she pretended to be a travel agent and set up vacations for tourists. In her twenties, she wrote poetry, which she said "felt like the great goal of the language." After she completed a thesis at Oxford of Joseph Cornell, she abruptly quit poetry, calling it "an impossible quest for poetic precision." [1] Nicole Krauss graduated from Stanford, and went on to receive degrees from Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute in London. She has been a finalist for the Yale Younger Poet's Prize, and her poetry has appeared in publications such as the Paris Review, Ploughshares, and Doubletake. [2]
[edit] The History of Love
The History of Love is a novel based on many unpublished lonely writers on a search for meaning in their lives. Main characters such as Leo Gursky, and Alma Singer, with the help of Krauss, cohesively unravel before your eyes. The History of Love is an homage to things lost, and to unsolved mysteries. Leo and Alma are searching for answers to questions that have developed over some time. The History of Love is the basis for all these questions; it is the book searched throughout the story. Leo Gursky is an old man who feels as though he is disappearing. He tries at all costs to reflect attention to himself, but has a void in his life. A lost son is sought to give this lonely man a feeling that he produced something of importance in his life. Alma is a young teenage girl who is trying to survive with her family after her father has died. She is led to solving the mystery of The History of Love to understand why she was named Alma. The History of Love is about Love, Loss, and Longing. The History of Love is beautifully innovative, with a silent magnetism that draws the reader in.
