[edit] Everything OK?
I don't want to be too nosey, but own-user-page-blanking is on my "list of worrying signs". Nothing wrong, I hope? BTW, good call on philo-book- vs. philo-lit-: Cat:Philosophy books seems to be the largest unsplit subtree of the Cat:non-fiction book stubs. (I won't re-stub these by bot, as "philosophy" is sufficiently broadly I'm sure there's all sorts in there.) Alai 18:16, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Indeed, I'd noticed you were keeping up the pace all right, no complaints on that score. :) Let me know if you have further such problems: the admin mob, and if it comes to that, the arbcom, take a pretty dim view of that sort of behaviour (though obviously one doesn't want to draw any more attention than is necessary to such antics). Alai 18:56, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
BTW, I'm not sure if there's an identifying information issue here, but if you wish the versions of the article with the abuse to be removed from the edit history, I can help with that. OTOH, if you want them permanently removed (so as to not be viewable or restorable by admins), see Wikipedia:Oversight. Alai 06:45, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Question
Hi Peggy,
Somone I know from CPS was interogated at school regarding this incident, and he was absolutely not culpable for any actions regarding the vandalism on the CPS page. I think the best course of action would be doing an IP check on Therlaener, and i'm guessing that it can be traced to the CPS library or someone's address. I left my account on at my school library, so whoever posted the ad hominum atfter Therlaender's attack was not related, just a random sympathizer. --SeanMcG 19:39, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- I want to thank you for your comments and your defense of the person interviewed this morning. I/we never suspected for a moment that that person was responsible for the edit; the interview was primarily to mutually gather and impart information. I hope to reassure the party concerned on that account. Our inquiries are proceeding and I can't really discuss them here, but I hope for a positive resolution, or at least a stop to the abuse. Cheers, Pegship 03:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Alright, I finally got around to changing my password. Let's hope this doesnt happen again :/
--SeanMcG 15:43, 25 October 2006 (UTC) BTW- Tharleander was alrready blocked by an admin if you check his block log- so they would probably have his IP or ISP if you're interested in finding out if it was at the CPS library --SeanMcG 15:45, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Only people with checkuser privs have access to that, not mere admins. Alai 19:11, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Well since this is an obvious case of a personal attack, is it possible to request someone with checkuser privs to check their IP? --69.17.118.144 20:37, 25 October 2006 (UTC)--> SeanMcG
- We have done that already. Like I said, I don't want to give too many details, and thanks to both of you for your suggestions. Let me know if you think of anything else...! Pegship 20:39, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Considering what you've already done, I didn't think it was really necessary contacting my school. We already worked out what happend online, and I had to miss a prestation on Harvey Mudd at my college counseling office in order to speak to my dean --SeanMcG 23:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- My dean had his reasons for contacting your dean, and again, I could explain why it was necessary, but this is a public forum and I can't go into detail. I'm sorry you missed Harvey Mudd, but you'll have to take up the issue of scheduling with your dean. Thanks. Pegship 23:53, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- if you could email me at seanmcguire89(at)sbcglobal.net that would be great--SeanMcG 03:04, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar
The Original Barnstar | ||
For being such a dedicated, hardworking and friendly Wikipedian. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 21:05, 24 October 2006 (UTC) |
Dear Pegship, I'm sorry to see that you've been attacked. Sometimes I feel that this project must be cursed since so many good editors are being attacked or driven away (what did we do? Write an article about King Tut?) Anyway, I've been thinking about giving you this star for a long time so now seems as good a time as any.
Don't ever doubt that your contributions here are appreciated and I believe I speak for everybody at WP:WSS when I say that we consider you both a competent and very friendly editor. If you'll allow me a quote from my country: "Courage, Anthony! You have done nothing wrong." (Ludvig Holberg: "The Pewterer turned Politician"). [edit] Re:"hoping you listed things right" at SFD
Hi Pegship - sorry, but no you didn't :) I've fixed it up. Basically, if you're the first person to add SFD listings for a particular day you need to make a subpage of SFD and then transcribe it into SFD (add the subpage as if it were a template). I've made the new subpage as Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/2006/October/26. Grutness...wha? 21:44, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] List of bands with complete sentence name
An article that you have been involved in editing, List of bands with complete sentence name, has been listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of bands with complete sentence name. Please look there to see why this is, if you are interested in whether it should be deleted. Thank you. --SkerHawx 01:49, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] LoC ISBN search.
Re [1], do you want to make a template that takes you to a LoC search page for the supplied ISBN?
If so, then the following may work:
- Library of Congress ISBN {}
(no dashes or spaces allowed in the parameter).
I think it's better to just use the normal Wikipedia feature that auto links anything with ISBN in front (e.g. ISBN 039453512X) because this also links to other libraries around the world. -- Jeandré, 2006-11-01t11:51z
- Agreed, don't bother spending time on this. It has been done better and more comprehensively by the "ISBN kkkkkkkkkk" logic. Also you need to be aware that 10 digit ISBNs will soon be joined by 13 digit ones. Any work you do independant runs the risk of being reverted as soon as it becomes visible in the wikiworld. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 12:11, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sources?
You changed the Irfan Khan (Ayodhya bombing suspect) article to indicate Khan was from Greece. Can you supply a source for this information?
Cheers! -- Geo Swan 03:04, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- I feel confident that unani means he practiced something that was once described as "greek medicine", not that he was a greek himself. The unani article says that it split off from the predecessor of the Western medicine we use around 900 ad. Post Hippocrates, 900 years before the germ-theory of disease. -- Geo Swan 06:36, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Technical procedural issue
I've run into a tricky problem, which may need administrator attention. The person who nominated the page I created called Wikipedia:Admin school (a forum page like the Help desk, but for intermediate users to ask their questions on how to become an even better editor and thus prepare for adminship) for deletion, has gone around and removed links leading to the page. By doing this, the deletion nominator denied access to the page (and its deletion discussion notice) by those people who might actually make use of it. Is this considered manipulation of the deletion discussion process? I don't know of any policies or precedents covering this, do you? I'm in the process of reverting the link removals, but I would appreciate it if you would look into this issue for me, because I don't have a clue what is appropriate here. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 03:07, 4 November 2006 (UTC) (aka Go for it!)
- My cautious opinion is that removing the links is bad form, but I can't find anything explicitly forbidding it. On the Guide to deletion page, under Nomination, the nominator is advised to "check the "what links here" link to see how the article is being used within Wikipedia.". If checking "what links here" is useful to someone considering the page's deletion, then obviously removing the links removes one way of determining whether it's useful. I have no opinion about whether the page should be deleted, but I do think you might just leave a comment on the deletion entry about the usefulness of "what links here" as the reason why you're reverting the nom's un-linking. Btw, I'm not an admin, but thanks for implying you think I am! HTH, Pegship 04:24, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Novels
I'm wondering why you think all the subcategories of Category:Novels should be sorted under a * tag instead of by letter — if you look at the category page, it doesn't make the category easier to use than sorting them by letter would; in fact, it makes the category organization distinctly less clear and useful. Bearcat 03:51, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I sorted them that way because when I looked at the page, some were sorted by * and some by letter, so I was trying to make it consistent. Feel free to revert it if you want it another way. Cheers, Pegship 04:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New Boy
I was interested why in this ([2]) diff, you amended the Cat so that the name of the novel no longer appeals in that Cat? --Dweller 08:32, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi there! What comes after the "pipe" in the category link determines how the article is sorted within the category; wiki code sorts by the first word in the title unless you use the pipe. If the title of the work begins with an article (a, an or the in English), you use the pipe like this so it'll be listed under "Man" and not "The". If there's no article, you don't need the piping. HTH, Pegship 16:15, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Ah. Got it. Thanks. Still so much I don't know about WP. --Dweller 23:37, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] About a film stub...
...which may not be a film stub: searching for the film Erendira, I came across The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and her Heartless Grandmother and put novel and film template. Yet the film's name is not the same, so although it's the only mention on the film, maybe I shouldn't tag it as a film stub. Can you please clarify to me how it goes in such cases? Hoverfish 22:58, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Greetings
I guess you might describe this message as the Wikipedia equivalent of the child's "Let's be friends" :) - Your username has been coming up on the articles on my watchlist more than once lately; looks like we're interested in the some of the same types of articles, (writers and literature from all eras?), and that we sometimes make similar types of edits (fixing categories, etc.) So, I thought that you'd be someone I'd like to know as a "Wikipedia friend", and I'm just saying a friendly "Hello". Cheers, Lini 00:23, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Operas by composer
I notice that you have been sorting out opera categories (without, in same cases, leaving an edit summary). In the process, you have deleted the category: Opera by composer|[Composer's name]. Any reason why? Orbicle 11:06, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] An Incomplete History of the Art of Funerary Violin
Greetings. I see that you added An Incomplete History of the Art of Funerary Violin to the category:Comedy books. Are you sure that this is an appropriate category? My understanding (and I haven't seen the book yet) is that is it more an exercise in musical composition and in musical history composition than it is comedic work. Christopher Busta-Peck | Talk 14:51, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'm going to wait until I've actually seen the book before I do anything more to the article. Christopher Busta-Peck | Talk 17:41, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Stub tag for The Book of Bond
Hi. I reverted the stub sort you did for the Book of Bond article because it is a work of fiction, so to tag it as a nonfiction book was incorrect. However, I really have no idea what to tag it as. There doesn't seem to be a stub tag for humor books, or "fictional universe" books either, both of which would have been appropriate. That's why I went with the general tag. Any ideas? Cheers! 23skidoo 14:56, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
