Pinoy Pop Superstar is a Philippine television show featuring a year-long talent search for the best Filipino amateur singers. It is broadcast every Saturday evening on GMA. The format is loosely patterned on American Idol.
The planned name for this program is Pinoy Pop Idol, but because this program is an unlicensed version of American Idol, GMA Network had decided to change it to Pinoy Pop Superstar.
The prizes at stake include a house (from Crown Asia in 2005 and Filinvest in 2006), a car (Toyota Innova in 2005 and Chevrolet Optra in 2006, a recording contract with GMA Records, and 1,000,000 pesos.
The competition begins with a long audition period; then for forty weeks, three contestants would compete each week in front of a panel of judges. The weekly winner challenges the winner the week before. The winner must be able to defend his or her title for four consecutive weeks in order to automatically qualify for the grand final at the end of the forty weeks. Then, a Pinoy Pop Superstar grand champion is crowned. The first two seasons' grand showdown took place in Araneta Coliseum on May 2005 and 2006 respectively, and was judged by Floy Quintos, Jaya, Danny Tan, Kyla, and Jay-R.
The third season is currently being aired. However, there are new rules in the third season after the three contenders sing their songs on their own rendition, the second round would force them to sing their song, but not in their music type. For the weekly winner of four consecutive weeks, he or she will qualify for the prelimination showdown. The remaining finalists will compete for the grand showdown.
