Point Breeze, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Point Breeze is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The name of the neighborhood comes from Point Breeze Avenue (which derives its name from Point Breeze, a bend in the nearby Schuylkill River), which serves as one of the focal points and major arteries for the community. Point Breeze is generally bound by 25th Street to the west, Washington Avenue to the north, Broad Street to the east, and Mifflin Street to the south, where the Grays Ferry neighborhood starts.
The Point Breeze neighborhood contains South Philadelphia's most significant "problem areas". Major problems affecting the neighborhood include violent crime, dramatic population decline and long-term vacancy of residential properties.[1] The area is commonly referred to as "Drug Row".
Despite its problems, the northern section of Point Breeze is receiving some attention in the form of renewed development. A great deal of new construction and rehabilitation of existing homes is beginning from around Wharton Street to Washington Avenue, coinciding with a trend of renewal around all of South Philadelphia.
