From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Portuguese national rugby league team represents Portugal in international rugby league matches. All teams of the Portuguese are formed from Australians with a Portuguese back ground. Rugby league is not played in Portugal as of yet, but there may exist opportunities to start a league after Portugal is exposed to the national team.

[edit] History
The Portuguese Rugby League Association (PRLA) was formed in 2005 to give rugby league players in Sydney as well as other parts of Australia with a Portuguese back ground the opportunity to play for their ancestral or original home nation. The PRLA is a non profit sporting organisation, with all monies going to the Rugby League teams, too assist running costs, such as jerseys and training equipment.
The PRLA successfully fielded their first team during their international début against Fiji A, in Sydney Australia on October 8th, 2005.
[edit] Future plans
In 2006, the PRLA will promote a Junior Development Program for players aged between 13 and 16. From this program, a Youth team will be formed too play Rugby League matches against other nations based in Australia.
The PRLA hopes to promote rugby league to both Australians with a Portuguese background and to the Portuguese themselves.
