[edit] Generation One
The Protectobots are an emergency, search and rescue team of five Autobots in the Transformers toyline. They transform into civilian service and emergency vehicles and combine to form the combiner Defensor.
The five Protectobots are:
- Blades
- A "rough and tough" warrior who prefers close combat with his enemies. Often at odds with the other, more peace-loving, Protectobots. Transforms into a UH-1 Iroquois helicopter. Motto: "War is a dirty game... and I'm a dirty player!" He was voiced by Frank Welker.
- Groove
- A steadfast pacifist who hates violence of any kind. Transforms into a Honda Goldwing GL1200 Motorcycle. Motto: "War is always a problem, never a solution." He was also voiced by Frank Welker.
- First Aid
- Devoted to helping and saving lives. Hates to see any machine, whether living or non-living, suffer even the slightest. Transforms into a Toyota Hiace ambulance. Motto: "An ounce of maintenance is worth a pound of cure." He was voiced by Michael Bell.
- Hot Spot
- The leader. An energetic warrior and leader who leads by example. Always active and wants his troops to be active too. Transforms into a Mitsubishi Fuso fire engine. Motto: "Rust never sleeps and neither do I." He was voiced by Dan Gilvezan.
- Streetwise
- Like his name, a "street-savvy" law enforcer who knows his job. Transforms into a Nissan 300ZX police car. Motto: "You have to know where you are before you know what to do." He was voiced by Peter Cullen.
The Decepticon counterparts of the Protectobots are the Combaticons.
Unlike the Aerialbots, Combaticons, or Stunticons; the Protectobots were the only combiner team from the pre-movie episodes that were not given an origin story. They simply showed up in the episode "The Revenge of Bruticus", towards the end of the second season. Throughout the second and third season, the Protectobots were utilized mainly for assisting human civilians during battles or crisis caused by the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. However, they often times were engaged in battle as well both on Cybertron and Earth.
Defensor holds a distinction amongst all the combiners in that he is the only combiner to ever form while missing an appendage in the US series. (First-Aid had left the team for a short while suffering from self doubt.)
The Protectobot who made the biggest impact on the series was without a doubt their medic, First-Aid. It was apparent that he took over the duties as chief medical officer for the Autobots after the death of Ratchet during the movie.
The Protectobots were last seen supporting Ultra Magnus in a last ditch effort to stop Galvatron in the fourth season. It is assumed that they were restored along with Ultra Magnus when the Golden Age of Cybertron was ushered in.
[edit] Transformers: Universe
The Protectobots in Transformers: Universe were an American release of the Japanese G1 Sixturbo team.
- Prowl (Road Police)
- Team commander turns into a white police car.
Japanese tech spec: The leader of the Turbo Team, Road Police has a warm central processor and a strong sense of justice. A gun collector without equal, he enjoys accumulating Earth handguns, though he's annoyed that they're not the right size for him. A master of the fast draw, he's the best of the Micromasters in short-range marksmanship.
- Groove (Glide)
- Team scout turns into a blue motorcycle.
Japanese tech spec: Among the Cybertrons, this warrior is known to be the happiest about their coming to Earth. When not in combat, he can usually be seen having fun tooling around, giving rides to Earthling females. He claims it's all a part of his intelligence-gathering activities. Though he appears frivolous, make no mistake, this fighter's got speed and strength in spades.
- Streetwise (Circuit)
- Team Recon/Courier turns into a white Formula-1 race car.
Japanese tech spec: Boasting of the highest speed of the Turbo Team, Circuit is often given reconnaissance and messenger missions thanks to his impressive scouting ability. Though unrivaled in driving technique, he is easily excited and often races around wildly. This has earned him frequent warnings from Road Police. Circuit has the special ability to converse with the wind(?).
- Hot Spot (Neo-Wheel)
- Team warrior turns into a yellow car.
Japanese tech spec: An aloof, nature-loving warrior, Neo-Wheel has little taste for following and participating in strategies with the rest of his team, save for those that require combining. If anything, he is often found in the wild amongst animals. He won't say for sure himself, but he appears to have the special ability to communicate with the animals. Neo-Wheel is indeed a warrior of many mysteries.
- Red Alert (Discharge)
- Team firefighter, female, turns into a red fire engine.
Japanese tech spec: Contrary to her robust outward appearance, Discharge is a female Cybertron warrior. Few Cybertron fighters have seen her true appearance, as she is usually equipped in her heat-resistant armor. Devoting her passion to firefighting and rescue missions, Discharge really shines, no matter how she looks on the outside. She doesn't enjoy aggressively participating in battle, but she can be rather scary when angered.
- First Aid (Sireen)
- Team medic/strategist turns into an ambulance.
Japanese tech spec: As his appearance suggests, Sireen is a doctor who conducts the Cybertrons' health care and medical treatment. The equipment over his head doesn't store offensive weaponry, but rather various medical tools and devices so he can deal with all sorts of emergency repairs. He and Digo of the Liner Team are old friends, and the two of them work together as the "central processors" of the Micromasters for designing strategies.
- Defensor (Sixturbo)
- Combined form of the team. The combined extra parts of Defensor can also be turned into a jet which can be piloted by one of the members of the team.
[edit] War Within
The Protectobots are featured in their Cybertronian forms in the second installment of the prequel War Within comic series. In this chapter of Transformer history (which takes place long before contact with Earth), the Protectobots are a vigilante squad of peacekeepers. While loosely affiliated with the Autobots, they are a splinter group (as are most other teams).
