R. John Hayes

Ronald John Charles Hayes (born October 9, 1959, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is a sports builder and administrator, writer and editor in Edmonton.
An early participant in the sport of Ball Hockey, Hayes founded the Edmonton Ball Hockey League in 1978 and was one of the founders of the Alberta Ball Hockey Association in 1981. He played in two and later refereed in three Canadian national championships. He was a player, coach, manager, referee and administrator in soccer in Edmonton and Alberta, and worked from 2001 until 2004 as administrator of the Alberta Major Soccer League. In 2006, he became executive director of SportAbility Alberta[1].
He wrote and continues to work as a freelance writer and journalist. He was the fourth editor of the annual Alberta Poetry Yearbook, and worked as a staff editor for the influential Alberta Report newsmagazine, the First Nations newspapers Windspeaker and Alberta Sweetgrass, and several sports and literary publications. Hayes and his business partner Colin F. Smith, operating as Hayes & Smith, Publishers, published several books, including Looking Forward, Looking Back (2003) by Louis J. Broten[2].
He stood unsuccessfully for election to the Parliament of Canada for the riding of Edmonton Southwest in 1988 as a Libertarian[3]. Hayes was elected to chair the parks, recreation and culture board of the town of Devon, Alberta from 2002 to 2004[4]. He is a member of the Knights of the North.
