Revenge of the Mummy is an indoor steel roller coaster featured at both the Universal Orlando Resort and the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. Both coasters are themed after the popular Mummy movies directed by Stephen Sommers. The rides opened on May 21, 2004 (Florida) and June 25, 2004 (Hollywood) and were built by Premier Rides. The Orlando version of the ride was reputed to be built at a cost of $40,000,000 USD. Both coasters have a height restriction of 48 inches.
The Revenge of the Mummy coasters use Linear Induction Motors (LIM), a technology used to launch riders from a complete standstill. The coaster in Florida features 3 LIM launches.
The coaster in Florida lasts 3 minutes and features a top speed of 45 mph. The track is 2200 ft long featuring no inversions and a 50 degree angle of descent. The building housing the Florida version of the coaster was previously home to one of Universal's landmark attractions, "KONGfrontation". Homages to the Kong attraction can be found in several areas within the Mummy attraction. The Hollywood version last about 2 minutes and is housed in the building for another former attraction, the E.T. Adventure
While both rides are alike in moniker, both have very different plots and track layouts. The Florida version boasts a fake unload section. The Hollywood version boasts a backwards section climaxing in a fiery turntable ending.
[edit] Florida Version
Guests enter the ride by browsing through a film setup for the fictional "third Mummy movie". The film's props, molds, and concept drawings are on display near the entrance to the ride. The inside queue morphs into a 1940s archeaological dig, where guests board mine cars utilizing individual lap bars.
Once the mine cars move away from the loading area, guests discover Reggie, a production assistant of the set, being sacrificed to Imhotep. Imhotep tell us that "With your souls, I shall rule for all eternity". The mine cars make their way into a giant treasure room, featuring many artifacts and a King Kong statue (in homage to the attraction's original tenant). Imhotep offers riders a life of riches or "bitter treasure" before warrior mummies arise. The cars dip out from under a falling wall, and are sent into an encounter with scarab beetles, before being sent backwards, rotated, then rocketed upwards into the coaster portion.
The ride features a "fake unload" sequence, parodying the unload areas of theme park rides. The silhouette of a worker sitting in a control booth is seen, before she is disintegrated into a skeleton. The booth's window "explodes" and Imhotep is seen in 3 dimensional animatronic form. Promising that "Death is only the beginning", the mine cars drop 45 feet into a fiery pit and are sent hurtling towards the finale.
[edit] Hollywood Version
The Hollywood version of the ride features scarab beetles, warrior mummies, and Imhotep in sand form as well. However the movie set backstory is dropped in favor of an actual cursed tomb, where riders board mine cars. Hollywood's coaster was built in the gutted E.T. Adventure building, so the coaster was built by digging downward to accommodate space. The coaster features a long backwards section, unlike Florida. Also unlike Florida's version, there is no "fake unload" sequence or Brendan Fraser film projection at the end.
[edit] Hollywood Description
Revenge Of The Mummy-The Ride is a high speed indoor roller coaster themed to the popular Universal movie “The Mummy”. When you first enter the curse filled tomb, you notice the immediate lack of light, along with heiroglyphs carved in the ways. Then you enter the chamber of curses as two women tell the story of Imhotep, and how the mummy will use the Solar Eclipse to destroy man.
Going further is the loading dock, where two trains line up, for loading and unloading. You pull down your lap bars, and watch the attendants for the signal. Everything checks out okay. Moving slowly, you move into the tomb, you notice a corpse on the left returning to life while roaring at you. Then you see a man above you. He’s very shaken, and warns us once again the curse is real, and to escape while we can. Out of nowhere, scarab beetles engulf the man-alive as some riders feel the blood drops of the dead man. Going on further and further into the tomb, the dead become the living as they try to grab at you. The sounds of hissing and moans of pain stain the area as you enter the Treasure Room. All the gold and lavish colors surrounding the tomb. The image of the wall is Imhotep's face made of sand. He gives gives you two paths to take-either serve him and live all eternity,or join him and his followers in eternal death. Closer and closer as you reach, Behind the Corner is two Warroir mummies in attack position with glowing Orange eyes wait to attack as Imhotep chants the curse of your demise. After his speech your train then launchs into the underworld while two more Warroir mummies attack falling from both sides of the mine car. Pulling forty five miles per hour, you speed into through the darkness as evil spirits chase down at you.
Finally stopping rather abruptly, you enter yet another section of the tomb. Scarab beetles come pouring at you from all four sides as you move backwards back into the tomb. After another few momments of terror you stop again this time in daylight, you see the image of the mummy painted onto the sky as the eclipse destroys the evil curse. Then you enter back into the Real world
