Richard Whelan

Richard Whelan was a 28-year-old man from London who was stabbed to death on the top deck of the number 43a London bus in Islington, on 29 July 2005. Reports[1] say a man on the bus began insulting passengers and throwing food, eventually driving all but Whelan and his girlfriend off the top deck. When the man began insulting Whelan's girlfriend, he defended her and was stabbed up to six times. The police described the attack as unprovoked.
Some controversy became attached to the reporting of the crime by the BBC[2] as the murder of Anthony Walker occurred a few days before and received greater coverage. However, the BBC noted that Walker's killing was racially-motivated and thus a national story whilst Whelan's was not and thus remained a local story.
