S&M is Metallica's ninth album, recorded live with the San Francisco Symphony on 1999-04-21 and 22. The set list contains songs from Ride the Lightning through ReLoad, as well as two new songs: "− Human" and "No Leaf Clover". "− Human" ("Minus Human") has never been performed without the symphony, but "No Leaf Clover" has been played live with a tape of the orchestral prelude.

Composer Michael Kamen scored the symphonic arrangement.

The album's title is a play on words. The "S" (ostensibly for "symphony") is formed from a backwards treble clef, while the "M" (ostensibly for "Metallica") is taken from the band's classic logo. S&M is also a well-known abbreviation for sadism and masochism. Some fans think the title of the album may also be an homage to a song with the same title by Thin Lizzy, one of Metallica's influences.

During the show Hetfield re-named the song "Of Wolf And Man" to "Of Wolfgang And Man" in a reference to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

[edit] The DVD/VHS

Metallica also filmed and released the concert in DVD and VHS. The video was directed by Wayne Isham. The VHS set has only the concert video, while the double DVD set has 5.1 sound, 41 minute long documentary about the concert, and two No Leaf Clover music videos; "Cut & Slice" version and the "Maestro Edit." The DVD also contains four songs with multi-angles where each band member can be viewed individually (Of Wolf And Man, Fuel, Sad But True and Enter Sandman).
