Saffron City (ヤマブキシティ Yamabuki Shiti?, Yamabuki City in the original Japanese) is a large, fictional metropolis, the center of the urban plains in the center of Kanto, the country in the first generation of the Pokémon video games. It is the largest city in the region. It houses the sixth Pokémon Gym, where Pokémon trainers go to take on the gym leader Sabrina for the Marsh Badge.

It also houses the Silph Co., the company that produces Pokéballs for trainers to catch Pokémon with. In the games Team Rocket, the antagonists of the main character, take over Silph Co. in an attempt to steal the Master Ball, a pokéball that will capture any pokémon without fail, that Silph has recently created. It is the player's job to stop them.

Also in the town is a secondary Gym where, rather than a gym badge you get a Fighting-type Pokémon. There is also a house where a man will give the player a free TM 29, which will allow the trainer to teach a pokémon the attack Psychic, as long as they are compatible with a Psychic attack. Saffron also houses the Pokémon Trainer's Fan Club, where several in-game persons hang out talking about their favorite trainers.

[edit] Gyms

Two Gyms exist in Saffron City. One is the official Pokémon League Gym, a group of Psychic trainers led by Sabrina, the gym leader. Next to it stands the Fighting Dojo, an unofficial gym made up of Fighting trainers.
It was suggested by city residents in the games that the Fighting Dojo was once an official League Gym, but lost its status to the rival Psychic gym (Psychic Pokémon attacks badly damage Fighting types). In the RBY continuity, defeating the Dojo Master would allow the player to obtain either Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. In the GSC continuity, the Dojo master had moved to Johto to train. He can be found deep in Mount Mortar and if the player defeats him he/she will be rewarded with a Tyrogue.

The official Gym is built up of Psychic trainers, and the nine rooms in the gym are connected by teleporters. Sabrina the Gym Master is in the central room. It is advisable to memorise the route taken, as getting lost in the gym is quite easy to do.

In the Yellow version, the Saffron gym is the site of a well-known Glitch City. If a player does the Glitch City trick and goes to route 13, they will be taken to a Glitch City in which any move the player makes sends them to the Saffron Gym. Once the player leaves the Saffron gym, they'll be in a completely different Glitch City.

[edit] Silph Co.

Main article: Silph Co.

Silph Co. is the leading manufacturer of Pokémon technology. It is this company that produces the Pokéballs used by trainers to capture Pokémon, and they are constantly looking for ways to improve upon them.

The Silph Co. Head Office Building is the largest & most prominent building in Saffron City. It is also the largest "dungeon" area in Red/Blue/Yellow and FireRed/LeafGreen.

[edit] Magnet Train

In the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions, Saffron has a station for the Magnet Train which runs between there and Goldenrod City in the Johto Region.

[edit] The Copycat

A notable resident of Saffron is the Copycat. She is known for her skill in mimicry and even mimics the player. She is also a Poké Doll collector and in RBY she gives the player a TM (Mimic) if the player gives her a Poké Doll.

In the GSC continuities, she still mimics away but has lost her favorite Poké Doll. If the player finds it (it is in Vermilion City, in the Pokémon Fan Club) he/she will be rewarded with a ticket for the Magnet Train (she got the ticket because the station is her now-former house).

Speaking to the Copycat involves the only dialogue that the player's character says throughout the game.

[edit] Super Smash Bros.

In Super Smash Bros., Saffron City is a stage. It is played on top of 3 buildings. The middle building is tallest, and Pokémon, like Electrode, Chansey, Charmander, and Venusaur come out of the building and do various acts depending upon the Pokemon. For example, Electrode does Self-Destruct, Venusaur does what appears to be Razor Leaf, and Charmander does Flamethrower, all which hurt whoever is in the way. Chansey, on the other hand, spouts out Eggs which contain various items.

[edit] In The Anime

Ash and friends arrive in Saffron City so Ash can challenge Sabrina for her gym badge. Ash tries his hardest to win, but fails miserably.[1] So Ash goes to Lavender Town to try to catch a Ghost type Pokémon, a Psychic type's major weakness. Ash meets and "captures" a Haunter and then heads back to Saffron.[2] Ash then callenges Sabrina again, as she had captured Misty and Brock and turned them into dolls along with her own mother! Ash couldn't get "his" Haunter to battle Sabrina; Haunter just wanted to be her friend. Haunter procedes to make funny faces at Sabrina, causing her to laugh for the first time ever, causing her evil side and her inner child to fuse, rendering her normal again. Through her Psychic link with her Kadabra, Kadabra laughs itself to defeat, meaning that Ash finally won the Marsh Badge and freed Misty and Brock, as well as Sabrina's mother, reuniting her with not only her, but her father as well, who had been helping Ash the entire time. Ash and co. then leave Saffron City for their next destination.[3]

Years later, after their travels in the Orange Islands, Johto and Hoenn, Ash and Brock return to Kanto, this time with May and Max. Stopping by Saffron City, May competes in the Pokemon Contest there, and uses her Squirtle to win.

[edit] Demographics

In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the city had a total population of 66. This makes it the largest city in Kanto. Saffron and Celadon combined form the second most populated metropolitan area in the Pokémon World. The most populated in Hoenn is Lilycove City. The most populated in Johto is Goldenrod City.

[edit] Trivia

When considering Kanto is based on a real region of Japan, Saffron City is the geographical equivalent to Tokyo.
