San Jose del Monte City (or simply San Jose) is a third class city in the province of Bulacan, Philippines. It is bordered by Caloocan City and Quezon City, both in Metro Manila, in the south; by Rodriguez, Rizal in the east; Santa Maria and Marilao, both of Bulacan, in the west and Norzagaray, Bulacan in the north. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 315,807 people in 66,179 households.
This town rose to fame in the 1960s when the then-president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, relocated to Sapang Palay, one of its villages, many of Manila's impoverished and unwanted squatter residents. Due to poverty, many local residents are illiterate or only semi-literate and their main means of livelihood, which are farming, poultry and livestock-raising reflect this. Probably because of its substantial distance from the capital region and mountainous (del Monte) topography, it has remained an economically depressed area up to now. Sapang Palay and Sitio Gulod are among its most impoverished areas. This had caused relatively high local crime rates and substantial dissident activity in the area. Residents poor hygiene and improper public sanitation, also contributes to frequent outbreaks of Dengue fever, gastrointestinal diseases, etc. Neighbouring municipalities, like Sta. Maria have progressed much, as evidenced by the presence of major commercial banks, fastfood chain outlets and wide coverage of landline telephone service, but San Jose del Monte does not have any of these to speak of.
It has its own representative to the House of Representative having been separated from the fourth district of Bulacan in 2004, yet it is also classified as a component city of Bulacan. The first congressman of the Lone District of San Jose del Monte is Cong. Eduardo Roquero, M.D., incidentally its last town mayor prior to cityhood.
[edit] Barangays
San Jose del Monte City is politically subdivided into 59 barangays.

[edit] History
San Jose del Monte was founded by the Spanish government in 1750s, and was cut off from its mother town, Meycauayan, because Meycauayan was densely populated at that time. It became a city in 2000 through the efforts of then-Congressman Angelito Sarmiento (who served as Secretary 2002 and presidential adviser on Agricultural Modernization and is now its mayor) and the local government of San Jose del Monte.
