[edit] Life and career
Born and raised in Cortez, Tipton earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Ft. Lewis College. In 1979, he founded the Mesa Verde Indian Pottery Company, a company he still owns and runs today. In addition to his pottery company, he also owns and manages Tipton Properties, a local real estate business.
Tipton and his wife, Jean, have been married for more than twenty-three years. They have two children, Liesl and Elizabeth. Liesl is a student at the University of Denver, and Elizabeth is a junior at Montezuma-Cortez High School.
[edit] Political Life
A lifelong Republican, Tipton became involved in the Ronald Reagan for President Campaign in 1976 and was a delegate to the Republican Covention that year. He also assisted and run local campaigns for Reagan in 1980 and 1984 across his home Montezuma County, Colorado and the 3rd Congressional District. He later served as the County Party Chairman of Montezuma County, and currently is the Party Chairman of the 3rd Congressional District.
[edit] 2006 Election
Tipton is currently challenging Freshman Democratic Congressman John Salazar in the 2006 Election. The district has a history of equal party representation. Before John Salazar's election in 2004 when Scott McInnis choose not to seek re-election, the 3rd District since its conception in 1914 had been represented by Republicans for a total of 50 years, and Democrats for a total of 40 years. Salazar won a fiercely contested race in 2004 against Republican Greg Walcher by only 9,000 votes, which some have contributed to a Democratic surge in Colorado in 2004, and due to the fact that his brother ran and won Colorado's open US Senate seat. The district was also one of a select few districts where a Democratic Congressman was elected in a district George W. Bush won. Despite the district's highly contested nature, Salazar will be a tough target for Tipton.
Tipton's opponent, [www.salazar2006.com/ John Salazar] is a close ally of Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Rep. Pelosi contributed the maximum amount to Salazar's race. Salazar's staff is also comprised of former Pelosi staffers.
Tipton Lost the election, and Salazar remains in office.
