[edit] Note to self re Solar Tower

I was going to add this to Talk:Solar Tower, but I want to get it straight in my own head first.

The terms that are commonly used seem rather ambiguous, so we may have to go for less common terms, if necessary. But if it's possible to resolve ambiguity with a term in brackets, that's an option, but I'm not sure which is better. (Updraft) & (downdraft) are good suggestions. Other ideas for clarifying some of the many solar-related articles include adding (thermal solar power) and/or (power generation) to the names.
I would still like to move the current Solar tower to Solar tower (astronomy, as that would be much clearer and avoid wrong linking when someone writes about the solar power style of tower. (Also note that googling "solar tower" gives more hits for the updraft style structure than anything else.) Any objections to this rename? Jdh, you don't seem keen, so I'll wait for your comment.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear... the whole terminology thing is a bit of a mess.

[edit] Solar updraft tower

Re Talk:Solar updraft tower#Neutrality

Hi - I haven't had time to look at this in detail. I'm not certain which editor your were concerned about... From what I saw of FlexMe's edits, he did seem to be making genuine contributions, but also removing things that shouldn't have been removed. I'd suggest replacing them, with an appropriate edit comment. If it's removed again without explanation or attempt at compromise, it's time for a polite note on the talk page, or their user talk page... Remember to assume good faith - always give an editor an extra chance to do the right thing. Quite often we get a pleasant surprise, in my experience.

Sorry I can't help more right now - I've bitten off more than I can chew in some of the things I'm doing. But please keep me updated, especially if it isn't quickly resolved. --Singkong2005 (t - c - WPID) 17:52, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I believe that Flexme, 211.29.251.198, 211.29.250.59, 211.29.250.61 and 211.29.251.98 are all one and the same person: IP addresses 211.28.0.0 - 211.31.255.255 all resolve to OPTUSnet
Anyway, thank you for your kind advice; I will let this rest for a couple of days and take it from there. JdH 19:27, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
I am me and probably one of them ... only one of them ... i am the one who was called a vandal by John, with my edits reverted, then had those reinstated by john a few minutes later.--Flexme 10:53, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

SingKong ... this issue of quoting sources giving reliablilty of information ... it seems sensible at first ... yet it is wildly out of control ... check out the comment on the updraft page where it is said to be an expensive way to produce windpower (it might be expensive , but this is NOT the way to show it) ... this is simply a website quoting the media who quote someone's offhand comment - possibly out of context ... this is not reliable! Or another ... the floating chimney, as jdh saw it was totally misguided (though it may start a similar but sensible design in sci fi novels) Similarly, if i was to "publish" my results of my analysis that is at present on my talk page and in the tower discussion page on ANY other website, even on my own yahoo freesite, then my results would suddenly become verifiable!!!!!! this is out of control. i read wikipedia a lot and find it a wonderful source of info, i had no idea about this shambles behind the scenes. when i first started editting i assumed that wikipedia itself was a nice central location to bring my ideas so they could be verified in some sense, but it seems that if you feel you know something then in fact you are best off going ANYWHERE other than wikipedia!? bizzarre!--Flexme 10:53, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please post link to changes

I read your reply on the mediation page. Your suggestions seem reasonable - my only comment is that you do seem quite aggrieved... While it's understandable that we get annoyed at other editors, it is important to assume good faith and be as civil as possible. Still, things certainly seem to have improved a lot, so I think mediation was a very good idea. -- Singkong2005 tc 01:43, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, you are right: my trigger level was/is set quite low. The reason for that is that "Solar updraft tower" has a very torturous history; you may want to check out previous discussions about that, see Question about this article and Self-promotion?. Basically, the first version of this article was written by Proton44, who identified himself as H. Alfred Goolsbee. Goolsbee is very much involved in promoting the Solar Tower®, and he actually owns that trademark. For his role in all of this you may want to check out this and this press release. Essentially, what Goolsbee was trying to do is (ab)use Wikipedia for promoting his stuff; that is considered spam and it against Wikipedia policy. So when Flexme started to remove material that was even remotely critical of the Solar Tower® I lost my temper. My apologies for that. JdH 18:30, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Anuragam and others

Dear Singkong, Since some time I've been wondering what to do with Anuragam's four sub-programmes (1,2,3 & 4) - whether to retain them or bring them up to the standard of Wikipedia. Infact, I was in a fix. Right now, work pressures are keeping me away from doing anything. By August second week, I may get a breather. I will take your suggestions with due respect. I see that you've also mentioned that my other articles are still not in conformity with the standards applicable here. They too will be brought in line. Thanks.--Pradeep 17:24, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Urbepedia invitation

Dear Chris

my name is Meutia Chaerani from Singapore. I volunteered helped out in the Urbepedia at Urbepedia. It is a newly set up wiki focusing on Urban issues, and currently needing more contributors. I'd like to invite your participation in the wiki. Also need to brainstorm more on how the Urbepedia can be different yet complementing to information already existing in Wikipedia.

At this stage, i'm thinking that Urbepedia would be more detailed and more technical, and also acts as repository of best urban practices from around the world, as well as repository of contact information of urban experts. Whereas wikipedia is aimed for a broader audience, the article should be easy to grasp to different kind of people, from kids to adults. In that sense, urbepedia is different from wikipedia, but of course, we can link both wikipedia and urbepedia together in the article page.

We hope that you'd be interested to get involved.

Regards, Chaerani 02:49, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chris, hello! I am from Demotech

Yes, and I just registered, got two welcome messages in return. One from you. Thank you.
I mail you to say that you're free to copy stuff from my demotech.org site. I really look forward to what you find of interest. Do not forget to look at the links I gathered over time.
No idea how you will work that out. You are pretty much experienced with Wiki's, so you'll find a way.
That's something I really have to find out myself. Wiki may be more interesting then waiting almost in vane for helpful comments. Will I get them through Appropedia? Does the Open Source principle work here?
Share your experieces with me.

Kind regards, Reinder

[edit] Category:Water quality measures?

I think there should be a category for water quality measures such as Suspended solids, Total suspended solids, Biochemical oxygen demand and dissolved oxygen. Can you think of a better name than Category:Water quality measures? --Singkong2005 talk

I agree it seems like a good idea. I think water quality measures sounds fine as it is logical and descriptive. I can't think of anything conciser at this stage. --Alex 08:02, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
I am thinking of things that need to be included or articles that need creation:

Initially spring to mind--Alex 10:32, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

What do you think regarding nitrate, nitrite, phosphate concentrations etc? The wikilink to each of these will give you the chemical properties, not necessarily the effects of them on aquatic environments and ecosystems. --Alex 11:08, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Not sure, but I'm inclined to add the category tag to any article on a substance or indicator that discusses its use as an indicator. I've added it to Nitrate for this reason (see Nitrate#Effects on aquatic life). The other articles don't mention theor use as indicators, so perhaps they should be expanded first. Water quality mentions various indicators, so I added the tag to that article too.

There are certain indicators which are very standard (esp. fecal coliforms) but many more which potentially could be used. I haven't done a lot of study on this, so I'm not sure where we draw the line. I suppose we just include anything that is notable as an indicator. Arsenic would qualify in Bangladesh, but I'm not sure which article is most suitable - Arsenic contamination of groundwater seems more relevant than Arsenic or Arsenic poisoning, but isn't about arsenic as a water quality indicator. --Singkong2005 talk 15:05, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Arsenic is an important factor in analysing water as are other heavy metals. It is quite expensive to test for individual heavy metals and require the use of OES (optical emission spectroscopy) or AES (atomic emission spectroscopy), or x-ray fluorescence. Usual proceedure is to use conductivity as a measure of ions in the water. There is also the relationship between acidity and increased heavy metal dilution in the case of acid mine tailings.--Alex 15:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Would this be a reliable way of ensuring that toxic metals are at or below a safe level? Definitely not where there is a salinity issue, but it seems from the following quotes that arsenic levels are much lower than salinity levels even in fresh water: The World Health Organization recommends a limit of 0.01 mg/L (i.e. 0.001%) of arsenic in drinking water (from Arsenic poisoning); and The actual amount of salt in fresh water is, by definition, less than 0.05%. (from Salinity).
I realize that conductivity is not directly proportional to salinity in g/L or percentage, but I'm assuming that there is a reasonably strong relationship, and this would imply that conductivity is not very helpful as an indicator of danger from arsenic or other metals.
It would be great to have info on this at Electrical conductivity. --Singkong2005 talk 15:35, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
It starts to get technical here. Different substances are toxic in different levels. The mechanisms by which heavy metals are toxic are different to the mechanisms that make salinity toxic. Heavy metals have adverse effects on cells and can bioaccumulate. Cadmium and mercury are some of the more toxic heavy metals. Aluminium is debatably less toxic. Salt concentrations have effects on osmosis in cells - relating to diffusion of water across a membrane. The international standards for toxicity are Dutch and give a good outline. I think they are called the Dutch Standard or something similar.
Conductivity will relate to the charge on ions in the waterway, and I am not an expert on this subject so I am probably not best placed to write an article on this. --Alex 15:57, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Energy portal

Hi! As a contributor to WikiProject Climate change, I thought you might like to be aware of the opportunity to contribute to the new energy portal, now that there is one... No need to reply. Gralo 17:22, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Chris,

Was just reading your appropriate technology page under your wikipedia user page, and noticed that you say you're going to suggest to EWB Australia that they use Wikipedia. My sense is that you've shift your view, and now would (and have done?) recommend Appropedia. Would it be worth it to change your AT page?

By the way, I got here by reading the Appropriate Tech wikipedia article wondering who all the contributors were, then thinking I should try to connect with them, then thinking that you had probably already done it. But a search for your user name didn't work out quite like I expected. So, let me know if you think it's good/bad (maybe bad form?) to contact other AT contributors to promote Appropedia to them?

(By the way, I love the symbol/character/wikimarkup insertion tool below the wikipedia edit window!)

[edit] iPod Shuffle

In response to your question on the iPod Shuffle talk page you can use this amazing, small, fast and FREE(!) program:

http://agoraphobeus.free.fr/iShuffle/index.html

You put the program into your Shuffle's root directory. Next, you create a folder named 'Music'. Transfer your song(s) to the Music folder via windows explorer or other similiar means. Then, you run the .exe and thenyou're done! Doesn't read MP4 files though. From what I remember you do not need to initialize the Shuffle with iTunes. There is also a program called iPod Database Rebuilder and it reads MP4! Jaberwocky6669 03:50, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
