Six (band)

The Irish band Six was formed on the television programme Irish Popstars in 2002. The program aired on RTÉ One on Sunday nights in the autumn and winter of 2001-02. The show was an unexpected hit among viewers, placing in the top five of the weekly ratings by averaging 450,000-500,000 viewers each week.
Sinead Shepherd, Emma O'Driscoll, Kyle Anderson, Sarah Keating, Andy Orr, and Liam McKenna were the winners of the show who earned a place in Six. Nadine Coyle was originally selected to be in the band, but she was disqualified after a slip-up revealed that she was only sixteen years old at the time when contestants were required to be eighteen or older. Coyle later appeared on the 2003 series Popstars: The Rivals, where she was the third girl selected to be in the successful British girl group Girls Aloud.
The members of Six released their first single, "Whole Lotta Lovin'," in February 2002. The single did very well, selling over 160,000 copies in its first week of sale. This single is still the biggest and fastest selling Irish single of all time. In July 2002, Six released their second single, "Let Me Be the One," which again reached number one on the Irish charts though it sold less than "Whole Lotta Lovin'." During August 2002, Six went on an Irish tour. Though it was popular among fans, it received mixed to negative critical reviews.
After the tour, Six's self-titled album was released and peaked at #5 on the Irish charts. Soon afterwards, Six unofficially split.
The band members have made infrequent appearances on radio and television programmes since the split, Emma is now a TV presenter on RTE's 'The Den', She also appeared on Celebrity Jigs and Reels and Celebrity 252 as well as being a DJ on Live 95fm Liam also does a celeb gossip slot weekly on RTE on a Friday afternoon and also works on video channel Bubble Hits. Andy managed a band of which Emma is the lead singer, the band 'Y23' also features Michael O'Conner, Chizz, Robbie Kirby and John McDonnell.
Sinead opened her own dance school in Cork with much success and Kyle, Sarah and Andy all returned to academia. Andy has left the world of showbiz and as of August 2006 has joined Barclays Global Investors as a Software Developer.
Following 'Popstars' being broadcast in New Zealand, Norway and South Africa, their debut single also charted in these countries, top 5 in both New Zealand and Norway.
