South Luton High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
South Luton High School is a secondary school for pupils aged 11-16, located in the south of Luton, Bedfordshire. It is smaller than average, and serves a population base that is generally economically deprived but tolerant. The students are multi-ethnic, with about 30% still learning the English language.[1]
It enjoyed success in its early years such as having a famous cross country pitch and great p.e. skills, but in the late 1990s its reputation declined. Due to certain controversies on the 19th September 2005 South Luton High School's headteacher Sherry Gladwin resigned from her post. After that Ms Jane Allen was employed as acting Head and now (in 2006 ) Mr Tim Westrip is Interim Head teacher.
The school then turned into a specialist arts college, as it is relatively strong in arts. Currently the school is undergoing negotiations to be reformed into an Academy and possibly moving site.
[edit] History
On the 27th October 1965 Stockwood High School for Girls was created with 500 girls going to the school. On the 7th September 1967 Stockwood High School became mixed with the boys at the top part of the school and the girls at the bottom part. There were 1006 pupils going to the school then. Through the years the population of the school started decreasing until in 1986 another high school about a mile away from Stockwood High, Rotheram High School, closed, and most of the pupils from that school came to Stockwood under the new name South Luton High School.
