[edit] Technology
Considered one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation (in the year 2001) for its ThinkPad program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace all phones in residence halls with individual cellular phones for students.
However, as of the Spring 2006 semester, MSC's IEEE 802.11 'legacy' wireless computer network, implemented using Raylink equipment, is widely regarded by students to be slow, undependable, and inefficient for both their academic experience, and their digital lifestyles. The school also restricts students' choice of computing platforms for those in programs requiring the use of laptops- both through mandatory purchase of Lenovo Group ThinkPad laptops (for most majors), and through the wireless network, which is inaccessible to computers running Mac OS and some variations of Linux. Choices are resticted because of the difficulty of supporting multiple paltforms, though many colleges across the nation achieve this feat with little trouble. The laptops are used in classes and programs where it is important that people use compatible and often identical systems. A large amount of the software used is limited to the Microsoft Windows platforms. Students not in college laptop programs can use any laptop they want, so long as it runs Microsoft Windows and there are drivers available for the Raylink wireless card. Without meeting these requirements, a user's computer can not connect to the wireless network, which is the only network available in the campus dormitories, along with many class rooms, that are without wired ethernet ports.
[edit] Campus Highlights
- A new highlight and addition to the MSC campus is a 24-hour vending machine dubbed "Shop 24". While the machine is popular in Europe, MSC was the first college in the United States to adopt it. It offers a refrigerated section for milk, eggs and soda.
- Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine.
- Being an agricultural college, the school boasts both a working (and award winning) Dairy of Distinction dairy farm located a short distance from campus and an extensive complex of equine science-related facilities, including a horse-racing track, located a few miles away on a side road.
[edit] Norwich Campus
The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus also offers programs in business, technologies, liberal arts/education transfer, and nursing to Chenango area residents and employers.
