I came across the term monition which I have redirected here. Looking at its definition [1], I can't really see how it differs from summons. Perhaps somebody who knows what they are talking about could add something to the article. Cutler July 9, 2005 11:25 (UTC)

In American law, the term summons is also used to describe an administrative summons (not issued by a court, and not necessarily in connection with a court proceeding). For example, the Internal Revenue Service, as a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has the power to issue a administrative summons under . The article as currently written is basically talking about a judicial summons, not an administrative summons. Perhaps the article can be modified later to reflect both legal concepts. Stay tuned.
