Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is a regional political party in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Its main agenda is the restoration of state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.
Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao was a member of the Telugu Desam Party until he quit the party and formed the TRS in 2001. He created a sensation by winning one third of MPTCs and one fourth of ZPTCs in Telangana within 60 days of formation of the party. He galvanized the masses and gave a new impetus to the relatively dormant struggle for Telangana statehood.
In 2004 assembly elections, TRS forged an alliance with Congress (I) and won 26 assembly seats. The party also won 5 parliament seats. It joined the governments at both state and central level later in september -2006 he withdraw support to central UPA govt as the govt. is undecided to deliver on its electoral promise of creation of Telangana, which was also put in its Common Minimum Program (CMP).
Mr. Rao and his counterpart Mr.A Narendra repeatedly assured the people of Telangana that the formation of new state is on the cards and it can happen 'any moment'.
On Aug. 23, 2006, K Chandrasekhara Rao, A.Narendra the leaders of Telangana Rashtra Samithi quit out of the UPA government protesting against the indifference of the Congress government which is backtracking on placing a bill eventhough the major opposition party BJP has offered to support. The BJP has about 140 MPs, the Congress has 144 MPs, another 119 MPs from different parties are supporting creation of Telangana state. Eventhough 400 MPs (which is much more than the required majority) are supporting Telangana Congress government is unwilling to place the bill due to pressure from Andhra lobbies.
Simultaneously, a non political forum consisting of 58 organizations students, workers, lawyers, farmers, writers, artists etc are struggling for Telangana state restoration. Formation of Telangana state along with Vidharba, Bundelkund, Harit Pradesh, Ladakh, Darjeeling is possible in near future. But people doubt the sincerity of Congress party as it failed to solve any issues of the country starting from Kashmir, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, North East, Caste system, Telangana, Health care, Education, Employment, Basic amenities to people etc..
