The Cat Who Went to Heaven is a book by Elizabeth Coatsworth that won the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1931. It was based on an old Buddhist folk tale. A poor Japanese artist adopts a white cat and names it Good Fortune. Commissioned to paint a picture of the Buddha accompanied by animals, the artist grieves that he cannot add Good Fortune to the painting, due to the supposedly unlucky nature of cats. The minister of the church resolves the artist's conflict and everything ends satisfactorily.
