The Central Institute London

The Central Institute London, in full The Central Institute London for the Promotion of Academic Dress and Ceremonial, was established in 1999. Its role was to encourage the use of academic dress, and to this end it assigned academic dress to its own members. Membership was based on the academic degrees held by members, and also included Honorary Life Member (HonCIL) and Companion (CompCIL) as honorary awards.
Its activities were suspended in 2005 and members encouraged to join The Burgon Society, which was created in 2000 with a more scholarly, rather than practical, focus.
A subsidiary body, The Academical Society of London, enjoyed a brief existence after 2000.
