The Mediterranean Caper is an Action-Adventure novel by Clive Cussler. This is the 1st published book featuring the author’s primary protagonist, Dirk Pitt.
Dirk Pitt is up against an international drug ring and the evil Baron Von Till, a German soldier who survived both World Wars to become one of the most ruthless smugglers in history. The novel is set in the Aegean Sea, where Dirk Pitt has been sent with Al Giordino to assist Rudi Gunn, the Deputy Director of NUMA, with an Archaeological expedition being conducted by NUMA.
[edit] Plot introduction
The novel features an aerial battle between Dirk Pitt in a PBY Catalina against a German Albatros biplane. Featured classic cars include the 1936 Maybach-Zepplin.
The Mediterranean Caper differs from other Dirk Pitt novels in that it does not begin with a flashback to a historic event, rather it begins with the events occurring in the actual storyline. It also lacks a cameo by the author, Clive Cussler, which occurs in other novels from the Dirk Pitt series. Dirk Pitt is mentioned as being a "Surface Security Officer" with NUMA, rather than a "Special Projects Director," his position in later novels. Often considered to be the first Dirk Pitt novel, Cussler himself has noted that the book Pacific Vortex is the true first introduction into the world of Dirk Pitt, though it was published years after The Mediterranean Caper.
