Tom and Jerry: The Movie is a 1992 American animated feature film, the first feature to star MGM's cat-and-mouse team Tom and Jerry, and the only wide release Tom and Jerry feature to be released theatrically, but Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry had a limited theatrical run part of Kidtoon Films.
The film is a departure from typical Tom and Jerry cartoons: Tom and Jerry have a new look in this film, giving spoken dialogue lines they didn't have in the cartoons. The duo works together to help an orphan girl in trouble, and the film contains numerous musical numbers. The film was received poorly by critics and viewers alike.
Richard Kind provided the voice of Thomas "Tom" Jasper Cat, and Dana Hill (the voice of Max Goof in the Disney animated series, Goof Troop) provided the voice of Gerald "Jerry" Mouse. This film was directed by Phil Roman, produced by Film Roman for Turner Entertainment, distributed in North America by Miramax Family Films, and originally released to movie theatres in July 30, 1993. It proved to be a huge box office failure, grossing only $3.5 million, largely due to the fact that it was released in direct competition with Jurassic Park.

- The first Tom and Jerry feature film ever.
- Chuck Jones was set to make a Tom and Jerry movie in the 1970s, but eventually pulled out after being unable to find a suitable script.
- This was the only animated film by Miramax Family Films to be released on VHS by Family Home Entertainment. It was re-released on VHS in 1999 and released on DVD in 2002 by Warner Home Video.
- Since The Walt Disney Company owned Miramax, this was the first animated film released by Miramax Family Films that was released by Disney.
[edit] Reaction/Criticism
Tom and Jerry: The Movie was considered to be a flop to critics and audience members. It did not live up to the hype as the Tom and Jerry MGM cartoon shows. Along with the criticism, the characters, Tom and Jerry, talked like human beings did, such as, Tom saying "I'm Tom", and Jerry saying "I'm Jerry", did not connect with the Tom and Jerry franchise at all. However in this movie, Tom and Jerry's faces were a little different than in the MGM cartoons. It featured some characters that did not appear in the Tom and Jerry MGM cartoons, such as the girl with blonde hair, although those characters looked familiar to characters that appeared in some animated shows prior to this film, but after the early 1980s.
