Tiruvottiyur (also called Thiruvotriyur) is a city and a municipality in Thiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tiruvottiyur is to the north of Chennai.

Tiruvottiyur was widely inhabited even before Chennai was formed. Tiruvottiyur is home to the ancient Thyagaraja Swamy Udanurai Vadivudaiamman Temple and location of the samadhi of saint Pattinathar. This temple was visited by many saints and poets like Appar, Sundarar, Gnana Sambandhar, Thyagayyar, Vallalar, Valmiki, Kambar etc.

Tiruvottiyur is located at [1]. Its an esplanade located on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The sea encroachment is a major problem for the fishermen here. Now some steps including grayons are being taken by the Government.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Tiruvottiyur had a population of 211,768. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Tiruvottiyur has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 71%. In Tiruvottiyur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
